Safe Breeds.

Producers who commit to the Responsibly Raised Insects policy are required to meet one of the following requirements for the breeds of insects they rear:

  • Novel genetic lines of insects developed by third-party companies cannot be introduced into production without an external assessment of welfare outcomes across the entire lifecycle of the line. This welfare assessment must be conducted on the novel line in an independent scientific lab by an approved research partner.

    • Either the producers or the breeder can work with the lab to conduct the assessment.

    • Once the assessment is complete, it must be submitted to Responsibly Raised Insects for approval for use on farms that are committed to the RRI policy.

    • Approved research partners can either be conducted by an approved lab, or can be approved on a case-by-case basis by Responsibly Raised Insects in response to a request by a producer or breeder.

  • Producers with their own breeding facilities must follow the guidelines produced by Code EFABAR to ensure that their facilities follow industry best practices.
